Subject: We're Hiring!
September 2013

Dear Friend,

This fall we're conducting an intensive effort to help participants get their GED before the testing protocol changes at the start of next year. If you'd like to help out as a paid tutor, you can find the details on our jobs page. We're also hiring a new Finance Director; if you have experience in fund accounting and administering federal contracts, we'd like to talk to you. Finally, a reminder that the Lincoln Park Farmers Market will be open through Thursday, October 24th, so there's still plenty of time to pick up your favorite fall veggies.

Executive Director

Big View Solutions Forum Thursday

Every quarter, the graduating cohort of participants in our Getting Ahead class present the results of their research on the barriers that low-income people face in moving out of poverty to the broader community in our "Solutions to End Poverty" forum. This quarter's forum is coming up on Thursday evening in the lower level of our office. Every Solutions forum is organized around eight issue areas.

This month's presentation focuses on education and how parents can get more involved in public schooling in Duluth.

As always, registering in advance helps us plan food and childcare. You can register online here

MNSure is Coming in October

You've seen the ads. MNSure is coming, and if you're in the market for health insurance, you're in luck. MNSure is Minnesota's health care exchange, an online marketplace created under the Affordable Care Act to bring together public and private insurance programs with payment assitance and tax credits to make them all more affordable. All the details will be available on October 1st at, but initial pricing releases indicate that there will be some great deals on offer for working Minnesotans of modest incomes. But don't take our word for it. When it opens, the exchange will provide a place to make apples-to-apples comparisons of health plans, something that was previously almost impossible.

If you need help using MNSure to find coverage for you or your family,  our Benefits Outreach Specialist Megan Halena can help you navigate the system. You can find out how to set up an appointment on our website.

Welcome to our new staff!

We've hired on three great new staffers over the course of the summer. They are (L-R): Megan Halena, Maria Princen, and Sandy Sykora. Megan is our Benefits Outreach Specialist. One of the core principals of our Financial Opportunity Center model is that public benefits are tools for our participants to use in moving out of poverty. Megan helps existing and prospective participants take advantage of these tools by assisting with the application process for health insurance and SNAP (food support) benefits. Megan holds an MA in Women's Studies from Florida Atlantic University and previously served in Americops and worked for Mentor Duluth, and Camp Fire USA.

Maria is an Americorps VISTA member working as an Employment Opportunities Specialist to support our employment coaches by developing curricula and resource guides on criminal background issues and establishing hiring partnerships with local businesses. Since graduating from Macalester, she's done geological research in Australia and taught English in South Korea.

Sandy is a combined Career and Financial coach who works with participants to help them get on track toward stability and asset building. She uses the state Employability Measure and the FOC Combined Financial Assessment to give participants a complete picture of their resources and weaknesses and works with them to fill the gaps that prevent them from moving forward. Sandy holds a MS in Adult Education from UW-Madison and comes to us with deep experience teaching employment skills and financial management for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.
