Description Just Sitting Sesshin
June 12-17, 2019
Hokyoji Zen Practice Community

We will set aside the activities of usual retreats and sesshins, like liturgical services, work periods, meetings with teachers and dharma talks, and focus completely on zazen, just sitting. We will practice in complete silence following a 5 am to 8 pm daily schedule that consists simply of twelve 50-minute periods of meditation with one-hour breaks for meals. This “sesshin-without-distractions” style of practice was created by Kosho Uchiyama Roshi and practiced at Antaiji in Kyoto, Japan and is followed at Sanshinji in Bloomington, IN.

While this is an intensive retreat and participants are serious about maintaining silence and focus, it is not intended to be harsh. Practitioners will be encouraged to take care of themselves as needed, for example, stretching or taking a walk or nap, while at the same time fully entering into the challenge and opportunity of the sesshin. It's helpful to have read Uchiyama Roshi's Opening the Hand of Thought for background information about this style of retreat and to have had some prior experience of intensive meditation practice, not necessarily Buddhist.

Leaders for the sesshin: Eido Phoebe Reinhart, Shodo Spring and Lee Lewis.
