Description

Building Nests:
Assessment, Treatment, and Support of Transgender
and Gender Expansive Children, Teens, Young Adults
and their Families

Transgender and gender-expansive children, teens and young adults are rapidly becoming more visible in our world. Transgender and gender-nonconforming youth, as well as their parents, are increasingly coming to mental health providers looking for support and answers, and are often met with stigma, bias and incorrect information. Gender expansive youth are rejected by their parents at alarming rates and are more likely to be harasses and bullied in school. They have higher rates of suicide, depression and risk-taking behaviors, and face unique medical, social and legal obstacles.

This training, led by Dr. Emma Forbes Jones, PhD, will provide an overview of the assessment and treatment of gender expansive young people and their families, and will educate mental health providers who work with children and adolescents in how to approach clinical work with members of this quickly expanding population.

Topics covered in this training include:

• Introduction to Transgender and Gender Expansive Identity
• Assessment of Gender Dysphoria
• Treatment of Gender Dysphoric Children, Youth and Young Adults: Best Practices
• Social Transition
• Medical Transition - presented by Dr. Katherine Greenberg, MD
• Parenting Gender Expansive Children: Engagement and Support
• Panel Discussion with Alliance Speakers Bureau members
• Community Resources and Supports

Lunch and a continental breakfast will be provided.
