SUMMARY:An Artful Approach to Understanding Ecclesiastes through the Works of Vincent Van Gogh and Pete Seeger
CATEGORIES:event
DESCRIPTION:An Artful Approach to Understanding Ecclesiastes through the Works of Vincent Van Gogh and Pete Seeger Written more than twenty-two centuries ago, Ecclesiastes is one of the Wisdom books of the Old Testament, though many struggle with understanding its conflicting messages of futility and joy. And yet, these timeless scriptures invite us to take a closer look and apply God’s gifts of wisdom in a society that is challenged by injustice, oppression, frustrations, and greed. Join us for this two-part program that engages participants through music and art to uncover a deeper awareness of the wisdom imparted in Ecclesiastes. Session 1 will focus on the first three chapters of Ecclesiastes, including a deeper dive into Chapter 3 using the music of Pete Seeger as well as the art of Vincent van Gogh. Session 2 will focus on the last nine chapters of Ecclesiastes using the art of Van Gogh and will include a deeper dive into Chapter 8 using a 4-part structure that can be applied to understanding other passages in Ecclesiastes. After introductions and deeper dives, each session will support quiet enjoyment of nineteen Van Gogh paintings paired with scripture passages from Ecclesiastes, after which small breakout groups will discuss and then share with the larger group. Both sessions will end with provocative images and quotes to encourage attendees to continue their own artful applications of Ecclesiastes in today’s world. Cheryl Duvall, a lifelong artist and Vincent van Gogh enthusiast, will facilitate this program that involves both passive and active engagement. During each session, she will read select passages from Ecclesiastes while simultaneously displaying images from Van Gogh’s vast collection in a stimulating interpretation of this Book of Wisdom. She will invite discussion about using art and music to uncover deeper meanings to sacred scriptures, helping us to apply God’s wisdom to today’s challenges. We encourage you to participate in both sessions if your schedule allows. The Well is delighted to be able to offer three levels of pricing for both sessions so that you can choose the option that works best for you. If you can only join one session, please do!
