Description

Joyfully Honoring Ancestors and Other Beloveds: a Mosaic of Gratitude

Fall’s poignancy and ritual shedding of leaves is a time that can bring grief closer for many. This joyful workshop honors the processes of grief and remembrance, of letting go and holding on - wherever we may be in that vast field. It creates a vessel for group and individual contemplation, self-expression, and creation that provides quality time to remember and memorialize loved ones.

We will use a variety of creative practices and activities to remember, share stories, and communicate our love and appreciation for those who have left the earthly plane. Participants will engage in storytelling, haiku writing, and the design and creation of a colorful mosaic keepsake. Our conversations and sharing will help inspire us and quiet individual making time will enable everyone to appreciate and celebrate those we love.

Community mosaic artist Cinder Hypki brings years of experience guiding groups in creative activities for celebration, exploration and healing. She brings her mobile mosaic studio to the Well, offering a sumptuous feast of materials for memorializing in mosaics. We are delighted to welcome Cinder back for her third mosaic offering at the Well. No prior experience with mosaics or any art form is required to participate. Cinder will guide every step of this joyful, creative, and life-giving process.

FACILITATOR: Cynder Hypki

FACILITATOR BIO: Cinder Hypki is an artist, educator and writer living in Upper Fells Point, Baltimore. She maintains a vibrant mosaic studio for her workshops, commissions, fine art work, and as a staging ground for collaborative art projects.

Cinder uses creative expression for community building, celebration and healing. She brings groups and communities together around similar experiences, pride of place, and across lines of race and class, to find common ground.

Examples of Cinder’s projects include mandala workshops with cancer patients, nurses and chaplains at Johns Hopkins’ Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, and creation of an interactive sculpture for its annual Service of Remembrance. Cinder designed mosaic workshops for five Enoch Pratt Library branches during a CeaseFire week. Her storytelling circles aid Baltimore nonprofits to strengthen teamwork on deeper levels. She designed How Are We Healing?, a participatory community installation for The NOVA Institute, to accompany Devin Allen’s powerful photographic exhibition of Baltimore’s uprising in the aftermath of Freddie Gray’s death. Cinder also works with individuals to commemorate loved ones through mosaics and other forms of expression.

For over a decade, Cinder taught and mentored students at MICA in their community residencies - undergraduates and graduate students in MICA’s MFA in Community Arts program. Today, she continues to coach and encourage fellow creatives.

Cinder is a writer and poet, and the developmental editor of the newly published book Healing and Medicine: A Doctor’s Journey Towards Their Integration by Paul Dieppe. She is editor of Drawing in the Dark by John Wilson and has published Far Field Farm: Stories of a Sturdy Dream, a book of narrative non-fiction about her parents’ land ethic on their Wisconsin farm. She has authored numerous articles, manuals, reports, and curricula.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

We recognize that sometimes plans change and you may not be able to attend a program for which you are registered. On rare occasions, the Well may also need to cancel or reschedule a program. Both situations are disappointing, but we are prepared with the following options.

If a program is cancelled by Well for the Journey, or rescheduled and you cannot make the new date, a full refund will be provided to you. For programs with pre-scheduled Inclement Weather Dates, refunds will be provided only if both the original scheduled date and the planned Weather Date are cancelled.

If you are unable to attend a program for which you are registered, you may gift your ticket to another party. Please notify the Well with your request at kristan@wellforthejourney.org and provide the name, mailing address, and email address of the person who is taking your place at the program.

If you cancel your registration 72 hours or more prior to the program start time, you may request a refund up to 50% of the program fee or request that your 50% refund be donated to the Well’s Scholarship Fund. Please contact the Well with your request at kristan@wellforthejourney.org .
