Whose Footsteps Are We Following?

“ We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.”
~ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is remembered in many circles as a “foot soldier” or a “drum major.” In states where the third Monday in January is observed as Dr. King’s birthday, and a federal holiday, it is a day focused on community service and acts of kindness for our neighbor.

In honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, we will gather in online community to ponder the question, “Whose footsteps are we following?” Acts of service can feel especially challenging in these chaotic and uncertain times, and yet we continue to be guided by Rev. Dr. King, Jr.’s ultimate dream stated in his famous speech on the Washington Mall in 1963, “We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.” How might we live that call today? Perhaps it begins with the simple, yet powerful, practice of loving our neighbors through acts of kindness, compassion, generosity, and other human behaviors that help attend to social challenges and uncertainties.

If you feel called to ponder this question, join beloved retreat facilitator Rev. Sandra Dorsainvil in a time of contemplation and reflection using the spiritual practices of visio divina (sacred seeing with images) and creative journal writing. Our time together will help us lean more intentionally into action steps that can be done guided by prayers, in "Kairos" or Spirit-led time, and knowing that members of our cloud of witnesses have walked streets before us in dignity and discipline. These practices invite us to stay open to how and when our action steps will surface, trusting that we made time to pause and reflect in a community of like-hearted souls.

Join us for this time of reflection and hope for what our footsteps can co-create with Spirit in 2027.
